Nearby Supermarkets and Grocery Stores
The list that follows is not all-inclusive; it omits some small grocers, primarily on Granville and Bryn Mawr. But it does give you an idea of what’s here.
M-F 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M.
Sa-Su 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.
This ultra-discount chain stresses its lack of frills, but the Edgewater branch has the unexpected luxury of an indoor parking garage. Cash, debit, and LINK cards only; bring your own bags or pay extra for theirs.
M-Su: 8:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M.
Devon Market’s produce bins overflow with items you won’t find at the chain stores, and its grocery aisles are peppered with imported, mostly Eastern European items.

At a glance, it might seem like this Andersonville shop is just like any old grocery store, but a stroll around the aisles reveals ripe, tumbling fruit at bargain-basement prices. Exotic vegetables and shelves full of ethnic ingredients flank a butcher’s counter and quite possibly the largest selection of tortillas this side of Albuquerque.
Golden Pacific Market
M-Su 9:30 A.M. to 7:30 P.M.
Planning an authentic Asian meal? Stock up here. Golden Pacific has the ingredients you need for Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Filipino recipes (among others). There’s also a small stock of Asian cooking and serving essentials, such as bamboo steamers and covered soup bowls.

This is the place to come when you need meat for a special occasion, or when the recipe starts with “Ask the butcher for.” Of course, they sell everyday cuts as well.

Renovated in mid-2014, this Jewel is bigger than many urban Jewel-Osco stores, and thus, has a wider-than-usual selection of grocery and drugstore items. TCF Bank, one-hour photo, beer/wine/liquor, propane, etc. Delivery available.
M-Su: 24 hours (Pharmacy hours vary)
Jewel-Osco considers this “our” store, but while it may be the closest to The Malibu, the Broadway and Berwyn store is faster to drive to. This store was completely remodeled in 2011; like most Jewel-Osco stores, you’ll find a TCF bank branch, one hour photo, and propane tank purchase/exchange, along with a serviceable wine/beer/liquor selection and a good-sized pharmacy department. Delivery available.
Malibu Convenience Store
The best thing about this store is that you can get to it without going outdoors, which makes it a Godsend for shut-ins. Most able-bodied customers come here for cigarettes, beer, wine, milk, or a quick frozen entree.
M-Su 6:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M.
This renovated Dominick’s store makes quite an impression, with an attractive, comprehensive produce department, large deli, cheese, and wine departments, a counter that will cook the raw food you’ve just purchased, and even a pianist at peak hours. Prices in the center aisles of the store are competitive. On the periphery, the emphasis is on quality rather than price.

Sa: 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M.
If you prefer organic foods and meats, often locally sourced, try True Nature. It’s a co-op for local beef, pork, lamb, egg, and dairy farms, and a drop-off point for several other farms. It also sells organic Glatt Kosher meats, and even has a juice bar.
Su-Sa 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M.
A comparatively new addition to the neighborhood with friendly customer service, quality products, and a shopping option for higher-end groceries
